Preparedness Project - Travel Bag!

 reposted via: preparednotscared.blogspot.com
It's a Travel Bag!
The contents of this bag could make
all the difference when you travel.
No more threats of pulling over,
or complaints of someone touching someone else.
Can you imagine the travel part of your trip actually being
one of the highlights?!?
Here's What's Inside of My Bags:
Water
Disposable Camera
Colored Pencils
Markers
Notebook
Stickers
Glow Bands
Lego's
Treats
(I use Starbursts because it takes little fingers longer to open them.)
Beef Jerky
Fruit Leather or Fruit Snacks
Small Mile Marker Gifts
Car Bucks

I printed these on crack n' peel and attached them
to wooden discs that are 1 1/2-inches.

The Car Bucks and the Travel Tokens are given for good
behavior in the car.  The Car Bucks are worth more that the Travel Tokens.
The Car Bucks can be traded in for souvenirs, and the
Travel Tokens can be traded for the smaller wrapped gifts along the way.
(I just purchased some fun things from the Dollar Store.)
Sanitizing Wipes
Hand Sanitizer
Band Aids
Motion Sickness Bag
I included a Gallon Sized Ziploc bag. . . just in case someone
needed to throw up,
but hopefully the link below will make it
so you don't have to use the bag at all.
Here's a Link for some great motion sickness helps!
The ginger candies, queasy pops, motion sickness wristbands
and the inhaler are all AWESOME!

I'm going to be putting together a

It will be in next Wednesday's Post!
I'm sorry it took so long to post.
I went on a qwest to make sure I could still find the items listed,
as well as the prices and where you could find them.
I started using these when my boys were little,
so it's been a while but . . .
You should be good to go!

(That's what I used the mini photo album for, and it holds all
the travel games.)

Preparedness Project - A Jar of Candles

A Jar of Candles with a TWIST!
Today's project will cost about $1.50 to make, but will be a great help in a power outage.
You will need:
1 Quart Canning Jar (Regular or Wide Mouth)
Amazing Goop Craft Contact Adhesive and Sealant
(We used the Clear Transparent Goop)
and
1/2" Plumbers Cap
That's all you need to create this project!
Instructions:
Take off the ring and jar lid.

Flip jar lid so that the seal is facing away from the jar.

Replace the lid with the seal side up.

Apply a pea-sized amount of the glue to the center of the lid, and the bottom end of the plumbers cap.
Let each piece sit for 40 seconds.

Put the glue-side of the cap to the glue-side of the jar lid.
Make sure it's centered on the lid.
Allow to dry over-night with the cap on the outside of the jar.
Fill the jar with 1/2" candles and a small box of matches.

Reverse lid so that the plumbers cap is now inside the jar.
Tighten the ring.

You now have a waterproof emergency light source!

Wait 24 hours before you use the jar.
Note:
If you are unable to find 1/2" candles, NO PROBLEM!
They have lots of different sized plumbers caps.  Just take a candle with you to the hardware store to make sure you get the right fit.  Make sure you can fit the cap on the lid and that the candle(s) and matches will fit in the jar.  I found my candles at Smith and Edwards . . . Love that store!
I decorated my jar to show it as a GIFT IDEA.
You can make a few neighbor gifts for Christmas right now, and if there's an emergency in the meantime,
No worries . . . You're good to go!
I print the labels on crack-n-peel at Alphagraphics in Bountiful.
They have the file if you want them to print some for you.  Photo tape works too!
Remember to flip the candle holder into the bottle when not in use to keep it from getting broken off!
You can attach the plumber's cap with a 5/8" screw if you want it to be extra strong.

Emergency Preparedness: Paint Can Heaters

Emergency Cook Stoves or Paint Can Heaters

To make this project you will need:
1 New Gallon-Sized Paint Can with Lid
1 New Quart-Sized Paint Can with Lid
1 Roll of Toilet Paper (cheap toilet paper works best)
1 Small Box of Matches
1 Paint Can Opener
1 Bottle of Alcohol
1 4x4 Tile
1 Bottle Opener
Label and Instructions (PDF included below)
Squish the toilet paper roll so that it will fit inside of the quart-sized paint can.
(It's a little tight, but I promise it fits!)
Push it all the way down into the can.
Pour alcohol over the top of the toilet paper to saturate it.
I used 16 ounces.
Remove the center of the toilet paper roll.
It should come out very easily once the toilet paper has been saturated.
Place the lid on the quart can.
Make sure it is tightly closed!
Use the can opener to make vents in the bottom of the paint can.
Use a sharp bottle opener to keep from denting the can.
Mine was a little dull!
Punch vents in the top as well.
If you do dent the can, just push it back out with your fingers.
Make sure you watch the sharp edges.
Add the paint can opener to the handle.
Attach the handle to the can.

Place the above items into the gallon-sized paint can and seal the lid.
To use the heater or camp stove:
Remove the small can, the tile, and matches.
Open the lid of the quart can and light the toilet paper with a match.
Place the gallon-sized can upside down over the top.
This creates a cooking surface.
You can also cook without the gallon-sized can
if you want to roast marshmallows or hot dogs.
Note:
The toilet paper won't burn, and so when your alcohol burns out - just refill it!
Now you're ready for SMORE'S!
