Look at design magazine pictures and see the 60-30-10 rule in action. The 60% is (walls and rug). The 30% is (shelves and chair). The last 10% is and a touch of (lamp, chair pillow, and accessories. This a percentage allotment to aim for but not necessarily to be exact.
Tie all colors together in one item:
Use one item that contains all the colors in your scheme (Like pillow with a fabric pattern, or a piece of art with all the room's colors).
