Our house has a very similar story, it was a 22 year rental and they left our house pretty much like this mess. The before pictures look awful but something is missing is the awful smell from all that grim. Its hard to describe. Seeing this turn around for another house made me super happy. Unfortunately at the time we didn't want to take any pictures. We just wanted the ugly and the memories to be gone. Luckily our place keeps getting better every year.

Looks vey familiar.
There must be a common theme somehow because we had a bedroom just like this but it was a bright scarlet red and the ceiling was painted red as well. Because of that red room I'm never painting a wall in our home red. Like the color just not painted on my walls.
